South Korea introduces bigger parking spaces for women

Women parking spaces in Seoul

As a woman, I’m not sure how I feel about the initiative of parking spots reserved only for woman. Especially when you learn that these parking spaces are longer, wider and better lit. And located next to shopping centre elevators / escalators. The outline (plus a female-icon with a skirt) is even painted in our favourite colour: Pink! Really guys?

No, it has nothing to do with sexism. The city of Seoul is spending $100 million to make the city more female-friendly. One of the many initiatives is to create these “she-spots”.

The idea is to make women feel more comfortable in the city. Other initiatives include building more female-only toilets and resurfacing sidewalks with spongy material that’s easier to walk on with high heels.

Female-only parking spaces are already implemented in a number of countries like Italy, Austria and China. I can totally understand reserved spots for disabled drivers, and I can even understand why some feel the need to reserve spots for families with small children. But spots reserved for women?

The city of Seoul received a lot of feedback on the spots. Some say it’s sexist, and others think it’s a great idea. For example, one person tweeted “Really? What century are we in?” while others say they like the fact that these spots are close to the escalators, so women don’t have to walk through the parking garage all by themselves. Think about it, is making the city 'female-friendly' really worth the money?. Come on girls, let me hear your opinion on this!
