Driverless vehicles will be soon introduced to the transport industry and may become a part of our daily life. RAC’s autonomous shuttle bus last year was launched in Perth. Now great news related to this area are coming from South Australia.
Adelaide Airport aims at having driverless shuttles functioning between the airport’s car park and terminal. The airport will be funded with $1 million from South Australia State Government in order to test three electric autonomous shuttles. Adelaide Airport Managing Director, Mark Young, says: “their compact size and agility will enable them to operate on a dedicated path at an increased frequency, potentially operating 24 hours a day, reducing road congestion and significantly lowering carbon emissions”.
Flinders University’s partnership with Royal Automobile Association of South Australia (RAA) will also receive $1 million from the State Government’s fund for the $4 million driverless shuttle trial. Students will get involved in the project which is going to last three years and finally the tests will be open for the public. “The trial will include the development of a mobile app that will allow people arriving by bus or train to arrange for a shuttle to meet them and deliver them quickly and conveniently to their final destination on campus”, told Flinders University Vice Chancellor, Professor Colin Stirling.
The autonomous shuttles are a transport alternative which might be applied in diverse situations, like both these projects reveal.
