Electric Cars May Get Special Parking Spaces

If you drive an electric car in Marietta, you might get a break when it comes to parking. The city is trying to encourage people to use less gas, but at whose expense? The city council recently decided to set aside a parking space for electric cars. The space will cost less than $500 and taxpayers will pay for it.
The city is also talking about whether to buy the expensive equipment to charge those cars.

Many coveted Marietta Square parking spaces may soon be reserved for electric cars.

"I think it's a good thing, just for the environment," said Marietta resident Carol Berryman.

Taxpayers could end up footing the bill at $500 per space and if the council decides to approve a charging station for the vehicles, taxpayers could end up paying for it at $10,000 or more.

"I think it's a little premature, but may be necessary in the next five to 10 years to consider doing it," said Marietta resident Trevor Jordan.

Jordan said he thinks the charging station should wait, but thinks a space just for electric vehicles is a good idea.

"I would be all for it, just for the benefit of having the electric cars I would be," said Jordan

Beth Sessoms of Marietta's Economic Development said she'll propose the charging station be installed in front of the courthouse in an effort to encourage use of alternative vehicles.

"We are very excited to have new electric dealership opening up, the new Nissan Leaf is going to be on Cobb Parkway," said Sessoms.

"When computers first came out, just a few people had computers. Now everyone has them. At first it probably will sit empty quite a bit," said Berryman.

Economic development officials said the space is for a trial basis, so if it turns out it's not used often enough they can turn it into a regular space.

Officials said they will wait to propose the charging to station to the council for at least another few months.
