City of Joliet Adds 19 CALE Parking Terminals, Replacing Coin Meters

City of Joliet Adds 19 CALE Parking Terminals

The city plans to replace coin-operated parking meters with Cale Web Terminals in a section of downtown.

The Cale pay stations will take coins, debit cards and credit cards, marking a change away from the dated cash-only parking system used for most of downtown.

The city has been converting commuter lots to modern parking systems. But street-side parking and the parking decks downtown have largely remained cash only.

One exception was a pilot area on Van Buren Street between Chicago and Scott streets, where a pay station was installed in June for a 90-day trial period.

Due to the success of the trial, the city of Joliet would like to replace all of the coin-operated parking meters with 19 Cale pay and display terminals in Zone A of the downtown area,” a memo to the City Council states.

Zone A is bounded by Cass Street on the north, Washington Street on the south, Scott Street on the east, and Joliet Street on the west.

Most of the parking is going on in that area,” Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said.

The council would vote Tuesday on whether to spend $179,000 for the 19 pay stations to be purchased from Total Parking Solutions. The item is on the council agenda for the workshop meeting that starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.

Total Park Solutions has previously installed pay-by-space terminals in the commuter logs at New Street, Washington Street, Eastern Avenue and York Avenue. The company also has installed pay terminals at the Union Station and Barrett’s parking lots.

The system includes Cale Web Office, an application that allows for remote access to maintenance, statistical, and financial reporting which would modernize and streamline the parking operations in the downtown area.

The memo states that city administration requested a proposal from Total Parking Solutions “to maintain compatibility with existing software and hardware.”
