Island Rab will be smart

As the first island in the Mediterranean, Rab relies on the innovative and smart parking management systems from MSR-Traffic. A partial region of the Croatian Island, located in the northern Adriatic will be in future equipped with wireless outdoor sensors. This „Smart City“-technology should help to optimize the quality of life, security for tourists and residents and the protection of the environment on the island.

The approximately 91 square kilometre large island of Rab is particularly popular as a holiday resort. Directly on the coastal strip along the sea, the parking spaces are located in a prime location. Reachable are these car parks only via an initially non-visible coastal road. To eliminate unnecessary and cumbersome parking search traffic and relieve the distance, dynamic signs will be installed at the crossroads at the beginning of the road, on which the available car parks in real time are displayed.

Tourists with little local knowledge and high recreational need, benefited equally from the smart parking guidance technology such as local businesses and residents.

Not only the need for an increase of comfort and safety, even local and weather related conditions will be considered by the smart techniques of the German company. The local conditions like Mediterranean climate, proximity to salt water and strong winds, do not impact a stable functionality.

A challenge which for the solutions of MSR-Traffic are not a problem: The wireless magnetic field sensors are independent of the weather, have very high detection accuracy and be poured flush with the road surface. If a parking space taken up, the sensor detects the magnetic field changes and displays the signal via radio to the control centre on. The evaluation can be performed in combination with ParkGard® Control Centre in mobile devices, parking meters or navigation systems.

The economic and sustainable benefits of the smart parking guidance system from MSR-Traffic convinced the operators of car parks on the island of Rab. With minimal effort, short system payback periods and low maintenance requirement, the system is installed by the Croatian partner Tehnomobil. It enables accurate detection and monitoring of all parking spaces in real time. Significant economic interests can be implemented by long-term optimization of parking utilization and relief of park attendants through fast and accurate billing of parking fees.

The reduction of parking search traffic includes the reduced emissions from car exhausts. An environmental measure that helps in the long run at maintain and promote of the island as a holiday and recreation area.
