‘The Smart Way to Park’ system Zoetermeer now officially in use

On the Wednesday 20th November, councilor Hans Haring of the Dutch city of Zoetermeer opened the first smart parking system of the future in the Netherlands. To more than 80 guests the councilor unveiled a mobile traffic information system with the words: “Parking Route Information System Zoetermeer now in use”.

Since last week motorists within the heart of Zoetermeer are guided towards available parking spaces quickly and conveniently. Along the streets electronic guidance signs inform drivers about the availability of all parking spaces, including on-street parking bays, in real-time. Floor mounted wireless parking sensors detect in real-time whether or not a single parking bay is occupied and how long it has been occupied. Soon this parking information will become available for motorists via a smartphone app.

During his speech, Hans Haring announced that he is very proud of the system designed, delivered and installed by Nedap and Vialis. From historical perspective, the Dorpsstraat in Zoetermeer was not build to manage a large number of traffic movements. Research indicated that enough parking spaces are available, something which local retailers, residents and visitors doubt, but they were not utilized efficiently. As the number one IT-city in the Netherlands, Zoetermeer showed interest in the innovative Smart Way to Park concept of Nedap and Vialis.Smart Parking Zoetermeer - parking sensor

To make this project a success, Zoetermeer experienced a unique collaboration between both Dutch companies Vialis and Nedap. The help of The Hague University Of Applied Sciences students led to the deployment of this innovative traffic and parking system. This integrated solution will result into an optimized city traffic flow: less search movements, improved utilization of existing parking facilities, safer streets, reduction of emissions and thus a more attractive city.

Nedap and Vialis joined forces in the Netherlands to improve the flow of traffic and to facilitate the parking process within Dutch towns and cities. Vialis links its ViValdi-system for dynamic traffic management with Nedap’s SENSIT-system for wireless vehicle detection. The collaboration of Nedap and Vialis effectively guides motorists towards available parking spaces on and off street in cities.
