Parkeon and ERG Announce Completion of the Bordeaux Automated Fare Collection System

Paris - ERG Transit Systems (Fra) SA, a member of the ERG Group and leader in smart card-based fare collection and management systems, together with Parkeon (formerly known as the parking and ticketing division of Schlumberger) today announced the completion of the automated fare collection system in the city of Bordeaux, France.
The new system allows passengers to use a single contactless smart card, or ‘Pass’, to travel across the Bordeaux bus and the newly constructed tramway network.

Initially 150,000 ‘Pass’ smart cards enable customers to travel throughout the city’s entire transport network. From 2005, the ‘Pass’ will also give customers access to regional trains and the regional bus network of Cars de la Gironde travelling through the city. The city’s combined urban bus and tramway network is handling 61 million passenger trips per year and this number will increase when the new tramway lines will be opened.

The first phase of the project, covering the bus network, was completed in Spring 2003. The second phase of the project, involving the official opening of Line A of the new tramway, was finalised in December 2003. In July 2004 the new B and C tramway lines will open marking the final completion of the project.

Yves Chambeau, CEO of Parkeon, said: “The scale and complexity of these projects demonstrate our capability to satisfy the needs of our customers with innovative technological solutions that suit diverse needs of all the parties concerned by this project.” He adds: “Our experience in urban ticketing and with SNCF regional rail projects means the ERG-Parkeon partnership is uniquely positioned in the field of interoperability.”

Norbert Schüwer, General Manager of ERG France said: “The Bordeaux project which follows ticketing projects in Caen, Grenoble and the Bouches du Rhône, puts the ERG-Parkeon partnership at the forefront of multi-modal smart card-based ticketing system technology in France. Our partnership enables us to support the development of French public transport most efficiently, whether urban or regional, as we have been doing throughout Europe.”
