South Bedfordshire saves money with solar-powered Parkeon P&D terminals

South Bedfordshire District Council (SBDC) has installed 29 Parkeon solar-powered Stelio Pay & Display (P&D) terminals in eight car parks across the towns of Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable, where some of the machines have been put in for the recently-opened Grove Theatre.
The main objectives of the new terminals are to provide a more reliable and cost-effective means of operating the towns car parks. The Stelios were chosen upon the recommendation of VINCI Park, the Company that manages the Councils off-street parking facilities. The majority replace the towns
old mains-operated P&D terminals and are the first such machines that Parkeon has supplied to SBDC. A barrier system has been superceded by P&D machines in Dunstables Ashton Square car park.

In opting for solar-powered models, SBDC saved money on the initial installation, as the new terminals do not incur the costs of cabling and connection to the mains electricity supply, nor the associated disruption.
The on-going running costs are also negligible, as each Stelio relies on free solar energy to keep its internal battery charged-up. Independence from fossil and nuclear fuels also makes the terminals environmentally-friendly.

Inspecting the first Stelios to be commissioned, former Chairman of the Council, Councillor Pat Hamill said, The introduction of the new equipment and the passing on of savings to our customers is part of our ambition to be a well managed Council and Im sure they will prove very popular with residents.

In a further money-saving and environmentally-conscious decision, SBDC has opted for plain paper tickets, rather than self-adhesive. Its experience showed that many motorists did not bother to stick the old-style tickets to their vehicle windows. Now all that drivers have to do is display the plain paper version clearly on their dashboards.
