Connecting Route Through Q-Park Zuidplein Officially Opened

- Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Q-Park Zuidplein Officially Opened

The new connection at the Zuidplein in Rotterdam-South was officially opened on Thursday 1 September. As a mobility partner, Q-Park has played an active role in designing and realizing this connection. Pedestrians can now easily walk to the hospital, the shopping center, and the public transport square via the wide passage. The passage also offers multiple entrances and exits, greatly improving the accessibility of Q-Park Zuidplein 1 and connecting it to the new Q-Park Zuidplein 2 garage.

Previously, pedestrians from, for example, the Ikazia hospital had to walk around the garage when the shopping center was closed. Especially in the evening and at night people did not always feel safe there because the streets around the shopping center are narrow and dark. Due to the adaptation of the parking garage under Zuidplein, pedestrians can enjoy a wide and well-lit walking route, open 24/7, between the Motorstraat area and the new bus station of Zuidplein.

A Great Puzzle

According to project developer Jules Sanders, it was quite a puzzle to keep the parking garage open during the renovation, but we succeeded. “Traffic had to deal with ever-changing situations because the walking route runs straight through the former main entrance of the parking garage,” he explains. The work on the parking garage has now been completed and the main entrance is accessible again.'

The realization of the safe walking route is part of the redevelopment of the center of Rotterdam South.

Martin Kruijdenberg of Q-park is also satisfied: “The existing Q-Park garage is fresh and accessible again. Via the main entrance, it is also possible to drive directly to the new QPark parking garage of the expansion of the shopping center, above which are the new Albert Heijn and Amazing Oriental. For us, Hart van Zuid and the municipality of Rotterdam, that is a win-win. Renovations have also been implemented to make the existing parking garage future-proof. For example, the speed gates (electronic entrance gates) have been replaced and some parking spaces have been made suitable to function as electric (fast) charging places in the future.

The realization of the safe walking route is part of the redevelopment of the center of Rotterdam South. Under the project name 'Hart van Zuid', the municipality of Rotterdam is working together with construction and development companies Ballast Nedam and Heijmans on the future of the area. Hart van Zuid aims to develop the area into a fully-fledged center for Rotterdam South where people can live, work and relax in pleasant surroundings. Pedestrian safety is an important part of this. The area is making progress every day, which can be followed live via De BouwApp.
